Thanks to IKKA colleague and diver, Florian Huber from the company SUBMARIS, we got in contact with journalist Alex Rühle from Süddeutsche Zeitung – a well-known and well-established newspaper from Bayern in Germany. This resulted in a very nice article about Ikka Fjord, well-documented with Florian’s beautiful photos and his impressions of diving among the other-worldly ikaite columns. Alex Rühle is describing the potential threats to the fragile ikaite columns from the perspective of 1) climate change in the Arctic and 2) future mining activities in the vicinity of the fjord. Hence, I was interviewed for the article as the Project Leader of the IKKA project, as was geologist Flemming Getreuer Christiansen, former vice director from GEUS. Flemming is closely following all the mining activities in Greenland, both those in operation and those in planning or prospecting. Therefore, it was interesting to read the comments from Eclipse Metals Ltd., who is currently prospecting in the Grønnedal-Íka area for REE minerals, and from Naaja H. Nathanielsen, Minister for Business, Mineral Resources, Energy, Justice and Gender Equality in the Government of Greenland.
