Valborg – Walpurgis

As tradition has it in Sweden, Valborgsmässoafton or Walpurgis Night is celebrated with bonfires and singing in the arrival of spring. In our neighbourhood, we meet with the neighbours around the fountain at Egnahemsplatsen with champagne (see photo above). We start by singing some of the songs traditionally sung on this Walpurgis Night. However, this year was different as it was the first year without our late neighbour Bengt. Sadly, he passed away last year and we shared one minute of silence in his honour. This day celebrates the arrival of spring, but you couldn’t really feel it temperature wise although the sun was out. Still cold weather, which requires the use of hat and mittens. We normally go to watch the ‘Chalmers cortege’ afterwards, but I was cold to my bones and had to skip it this year. Instead we went back home to warm cup of tea with honey.

Photo: Erik Sturkell. It looked so nice and sunny, but it wasn’t warm. This is what you would call ‘gluggaveður’ in Icelandic, which means weather looking nice through the window. Meaning, you should just stay indoor 🙂
