NordVulk 1974 – 2024
The Nordic Volcanological Center (NordVulk) in Iceland can celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. Yet, at the same time year 2024 marks the end of NordVulk as we have known it these past 50 years. The funding from the Nordic Council has come to an end, with funding being redirected into larger calls like NordPlus instead. Nevertheless, it still calls for celebration for all the major achievements NordVulk has provided over the years. Not least for all the lucky Nordic students and post docs, who got a chance to work on volcanology in Iceland for 1-2 years or more. Both Erik and I have been enrolled at NordVulk and are forever grateful for the exciting research opportunities that provided. Erik together with colleagues in Denmark, Norway, and Finland (Anders Schomacker, Heidi Soosalu, and Jakob Kløve Keiding) have written an article about ‘NordVulk 1974 – 2024’ in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and Finnish so far. The Swedish version was published in Geologiskt forum (link here), the Finnish can be found here, and the Danish was published in Geologisk Tidsskrift (link here). Photo above and photos below show the reunion of Erik’s fellow NordVulk students 1990-1992 from Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Sweden. NB! There will be an official celebration at NordVulk in Reykjavík, Iceland on August 31, 2024. Contact Rikke Pedersen for more info (rikke@hi.is).
